Dos pasados, un orden

Cuando dos cosas ocurrieron en el pasado, el past perfect marca la que ocurrió primero. La otra va en simple past.
“When I arrived, the film had already started.”
had + participio = lo que pasó antes.

Orden de hechos — lo que pasó primero

Causa en el pasado — explica una consecuencia

Past perfect vs. Simple past

Past perfect
The film had started.
La acción que ocurrió primero, más atrás en el tiempo.
Simple past
I arrived late.
La acción posterior, la que estructura el relato.
Solo necesitas past perfect si el orden no queda claro por sí solo.
